Roman Site

A historical site of national importance: The ancient capital of Roman Helvetia (1st century B.C. to 5th century A.D.), Avenches had more than 20,000 inhabitants at the beginning of this era.

The Roman Aventicum site offers visitors a number of important historical vestiges such as the Amphitheatre which set the stage for exceptionally large spectacles, the Roman Theatre, the Forum’s Thermal Baths and the “Cigognier ” stork sanctuary, as well as the Eastern Gate and the famous Tornallaz Tower column; the only column remaining intact out of the original 73 columns, inside the ancient Roman town.
