Avenches - Visits and guided tours
Games, sports and entertainment in Switzerland: cultural heritage is not just a stage set
Those guided tours are displayed in French only
There is no typical architecture of stud farms, as these institutions were created under very different conditions. However, a constant characteristic of stud farms is the presence of a central courtyard. In Avenches, all the buildings on the site are located around the courtyard, with the exception of the administration building, which forms the link with the outside world. The architecture of the stud farm is inspired by the rural vernacular tradition, also known as Heimatstil, through the multiplication of materials (wood, bricks, masonry, granite, molasse, etc.), the presence of modillions, wooden frames and half-timbering. While the envelope offers a traditional image, the structure of the farm buildings (a metal frame in the riding hall, cast iron columns and double T-irons in the stables) presents a modern load-bearing system derived from industrial techniques.
