Every year, the Galerie du Château d'Avenches hosts 5 to 6 exhibitions presenting works using various techniques.

For its fourth exhibition of the year, the Galerie du Château welcomes for the first time the painter Stéphane Meier, who lives and works in Savièse.

The artist presents works on canvas and panels: coatings, pigments, collages and acrylics, and on paper: collage, Indian ink, paint. There are also 3D objects: assemblies of mineral plaster, wood, paper and concrete.

His primary inspiration comes from the attention paid to our physical environment, both built and natural, subject to incessant variations in atmosphere and to the effects of time that alter the material. For the artist, this spectacle constitutes visual poetry. From there, the artist discovers "charges" linked to the colour matter which allow him a suggestive pictorial dialogue.

Stéphane Meier's theme for the exhibition is "Abstract Expression"; indeed, for him, the Abstract is a personal and free formulation, coming from his deepest recesses where impressions, sensations, emotions, beliefs, heritages and dreams come together and shape the edifice of our unconscious. The artist explores and plays with mysterious rules: the colours respond to each other, call to each other, the compositions balance each other and propose harmony or dissonance, strength or softness.

Born in Valais in 1970, Stéphane Meier trained as an architect at the Ecole Polytechnique de Lausanne, which made him aware of "the interplay of volumes and shapes placed in a two- or three-dimensional space and gave him a certain conceptual discipline". He then practised various complementary apprenticeships: drawing, painting, calligraphy and ceramics.
Since 2014, Stéphane Meier has exhibited regularly in Switzerland, but also in Bologna, Paris, Madrid and New York. Two prizes obtained in 2016 and 2017 during the "Little Treasures" exhibition organised by Trevisan International Art in Bologna and Madrid have encouraged his career. The Commune of Savièse awarded him the Mérite culturel 2016.

The opening will take place on Saturday 15 October from 5 to 7 pm in the presence of the artist, who will be introduced by Geneviève Praplan, sociologist, observer and committed person of the Valaisan art scene, blogger and author.
