Roman remains and shady forests are on the programme for this walk in the heart of nature.
From the Place de l'Eglise, in the heart of the town of Avenches, this hike takes you to discover the Roman site of Avenches before heading across the fields towards Morat.
Along the way, you can admire the impressive Roman amphitheatre, the largest monument of its kind in Switzerland. The Roman museum, located in the tower, will present you with the main objects found during excavations in the city. Along the way, stereoscopic glasses give you a glimpse of the grandeur of the monuments of another time.
Before reaching the East Gate, visible in the distance, take time to admire the Sanctuary of the Cigognier and the theatre. Imagine that the plain was home to some 20,000 inhabitants 2000 years ago. Once you have reached the top of the hill, take the time to admire the panorama of Avenches, Vully and Lake Morat from the Tornallaz tower.
Your route will then lead you through the village of Villarepos before reaching the coolness of the woods and descending towards Lake Murten, for a welcome swim on one of the small beaches hidden in the reeds before enjoying a well-deserved break on one of the terraces of the old town of Murten.
Free parking at the Route du Faubourg or at the sports area near the station.
Return either by train from Morat station or by taking the Avenches-Morat / via the lake route
